Avoid Excessive Exhaust Gas Temperatures in your Dodge Diesel

Exhaust gas temperatures (or EGT’s) are a considerable risk to modern diesel engines when they become excessive. When the driver increases the work load on the engine by increasing the demand for power, EGT’s can rise. The higher the EGT’s, the greater the risk is to vital engine components like the turbo and pistons.

There are several ways to reduce excessive EGT’s. Those ways include, reducing the power demand, changing to a lower gear, installing a high performance intercooler or running an external cooling system like water methanol injection.

The first is the most simple, reduce the power demand on the engine. Simply backing off the throttle will reduce fuel and thereby reduce the temperature. The second option is to change gears into a lower gear and increase the RPM of the truck. This will cause the turbo to spool faster and generate more air going through the cylinder and help lower EGT’s.

Another option to reduce excessive EGT’s is through the use of an auxiliary cooling system like water methanol injection. Water methanol injection will reduce EGT’s however it forces the driver to be dependent upon another system. This is not a preferable method of cooling your Diesel engine and Source Automotive does not recommend this as a primary method to lower EGT’s. The reason why this system is not recommended is because if it were to fail or run out of fluid, then temperatures would spike quickly and that could damage the engine and turbo.

The preferred method of lowering EGT’s is air. Turbochargers are very reliable systems and if the fuel and air ratio mixture is in a safe proportion, excessive EGT’s will be difficult to reach. Some diesel engines are set up so safely that getting to a dangerous EGT is almost impossible.
